Ledger’s current technical specifications list Nano S Plus with the ST33K1M5 Secure Element certified to CC EAL6+.

Nano X currently uses the ST33J2M0 Secure Element with CC EAL5+ certification.

The more practical difference is attack surface.

Nano S Plus has a simpler connectivity model: USB only. Nano X adds Bluetooth and an internal battery, which introduce additional hardware and software complexity.

On the other hand, Ledger designed Nano X so Bluetooth acts as a transport layer rather than a place where private keys are exposed. Sensitive key material remains inside the Secure Element, and transactions still require physical approval on the Nano X.

Is Nano X Bluetooth a Reason to Choose Nano S Plus?

For some users, yes.

If your security philosophy is to remove every interface you do not actually need, Nano S Plus is appealing because there is no Bluetooth connection to manage.

You connect the device when needed, approve the transaction and disconnect it.

Nano X is different because Bluetooth is one of the reasons to buy it.

Ledger states that Nano X Bluetooth transfers communication data while the seed and private keys remain inside the Secure Element. Even if the host or Bluetooth connection were compromised, transaction approval still depends on the hardware device.

Nano X users who do not want Bluetooth active all the time can disable it and use a USB connection instead.

Nano X Wins Easily for iPhone and Mobile Use

This is the clearest category in the entire comparison.

Nano X supports Bluetooth communication with both iOS and Android devices. That means you can manage supported accounts and sign transactions from a smartphone without carrying a cable.

Nano S Plus is fundamentally a wired signer. Ledger’s current product page explicitly notes that Nano S Plus does not provide the same direct iOS workflow.

Android users have more flexibility because Nano S Plus can work through USB, but Nano X remains more convenient if you frequently sign away from a desk.

Nano S Plus Has One Major Long-Term Advantage: No Battery

Batteries age.

This does not mean a Nano X wallet suddenly loses its crypto when the battery eventually degrades. Your assets remain on-chain, and wallet recovery depends on the recovery credentials rather than battery health.

But a rechargeable battery is still another physical component that can deteriorate over years.

Nano S Plus eliminates that concern entirely. It receives power through USB whenever you connect it.

Nano X’s battery, however, is not pointless complexity. It is what allows the device to function as a practical wireless mobile signer.

The right question is therefore not “Is a battery bad?” It is “Do I actually benefit from the mobile experience the battery enables?”

Neither Nano X nor Nano S Plus Wins on Screen Quality

Both devices use a small 128 × 64 monochrome OLED display with two-button navigation.

For conventional Bitcoin, Ethereum or stablecoin transfers, that interface remains functional. You can review supported transaction information and approve or reject the request on-device.

But neither device provides the experience of Ledger’s newer E-Ink touchscreen products.

Complex DeFi activity, contract interactions and long transaction data can be less comfortable to review on a small Nano display.

If you do not need those mobile features, Nano S Plus is not an inferior fallback. It may actually be the more disciplined purchase.

The Biggest Security Risk Is Not X vs S Plus

It is possible to spend hours comparing Secure Element certifications and Bluetooth attack surfaces while overlooking the security mistake that causes many real-world wallet losses: mishandling the recovery phrase.

Both devices still depend on a recovery strategy.

If the hardware is lost or damaged, access can normally be restored with the correct recovery credentials. If those credentials are stolen, an attacker may not need the original Ledger at all.
